Where can Ultrasonic Impact Treatment (UIT) be applied

Fatigue cracking is one of the most common causes of excessive maintenance costs and the premature obsolescence of fabricated metal structures subject to dynamic loading. Welded, cast and machined components used in these applications are vulnerable to cracking and accelerated corrosion due to the high tensile stresses and imperfections that are inherent in fabrication. The residual stress is caused by the non-uniform plastic deformation in the metal, which occurs during solidification and cooling during manufacturing.

The HJ-series UIT technology has applications across a vast range of industries to improve the fatigue properties of these manufactured components. The application applies wherever metal fatigue is the cause of premature failure of the structure. These applications apply in areas such as:

  • Welded structures
  • Bridge maintenance and repair
  • Cladding and surface preparation and hardening
  • Fabricated components
  • Metal components and structures that are susceptible to large cyclical loading
  • Automotive components
  • Aerospace fabrication
  • Shipbuilding and repair
  • Rail Manufacture and repair
  • Die life improvement
  • Die Repair and fabrication
  • Cast and machined components
  • Heavy machine fabrication
  • Earth moving equipment fabrication and repair
  • Surface hardening and wear resistance

Metals that benefit from the application of the HJ-series UIT technology include carbon steels, high strength steels, aluminum, stainless steel, titanium, nickel based alloys, and so on.
